MBZIRC

Project name: Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge
Project acronym: MBZIRC
Dates: 01.07.2018 - 31.03.2020
Total budget: 150,000 USD
Funding: Khalifa University
website: www.mbzirc.com

This project deals with the coordination of a group of autonomous aerial and ground vehicles performing complicated task simultaneously. The robots carry out sophisticated navigation and manipulation tasks in a completely unstructured environment. The envisaged outcome is a novel robot cooperation solution and its implementation into a realistic heterogeneous robot system. Possible applications include disaster response, search and rescue missions and civil construction, just to name a few. The project results will be presented at the 2020 Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge in Abu Dhabi as part of the international competition.

LARICS at MBZIRC 2020

LARICS team particiapted in the international robotics competition MBZIRC held from 23 to 27 February 2020. The Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) is a biennial international robotics competition, organized by Khalifa University. The competition is held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and is intended to be an ambitious and challenging set of tasks that aims to inspire innovative robotics solutions and technical excellence.

LARICS team for the MBZIRC2020 was led by Frano Petric with supervision of professors Stjepan Bogdan and Matko Orsag, and consists of LARICS’ PhD students: Barbara Arbanas, Marko Car, Antun Ivanovic, Marsela Polic, Ivan Hrabar, Ivo Vatavuk, Lovro Markovic, Ana Batinovic, Antonella Barisic, Robert Milijas and Marko Krizmancic. Being the robotics laboratory, LARICS decided to do the challenges autonomously.

On 15th October, prof. Stjepan Bogdan and Matko Orsag presented five new projects developed in our Lab at a scientific symposium “New research projects at UNIZG-FER”. They have presented recently started projects: AEROTWINENCOREMBZIRCSPECULARIA, and ENDORSE. At the symposium, the emphasis was put on possibilities of cooperation with economic operators as well as job opportunities on projects from young professionals and experienced researchers.

MBZIRC Project Kick-off meeting

Our project for The Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) has officially started with the kick-off meeting being held on 12th October, 2018 at our Faculty. The meeting was led by our Frano Petric, who is also the head of this project, and many of our staff and researchers attended it to discuss current and future plans for this competition and for the European Robotics Leage (ERL), which we will also be taking part in soon. Best of luck to our colleagues at both competitions!

LARICS to compete in a prestigious...

Our Lab will implement our newest methods and algorithms for our new project, the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC)! The leader of this project for LARICS is our Frano Petric. This is a competition where the contestants meet with various demanding problems in robotics, which means that it is a great chance for our team to develop new technology and solutions, which will be presented at the competition itself, to be held in 2020 in Abu Dhabi.

This competition was started last year by the Khalifa University in the United Arab Emirates with the goal of providing a scientific and technological challenge in robotics for a greater number of international teams. As part of this, the Lab will mostly focus on developing algorithms for complex tasks between aerial and ground robots (such as locating an object, picking it up and moving it, etc) and to conduct a quantitative research of the impact every individual task has on the entire mission plan (calculating the necessary energy and time per task).
