ESA-Croatia EO workshop 2020

ESA-Croatia EO workshop 2020: Space powering the Green Deal             and the Digital Economy

         Date: 5th-6th March, 2020

Location: University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing,

                             Unska 3, Zagreb

         Website: www.esa-cro.workshop           Programme: download here

The Croatian Presidency of the Council of the EU has organised its priorities along 4 pillars: a Europe that develops, Europe that connects, Europe that protects and Europe that is influential. Space in general, and EO in particular, can contribute significantly to all four priority objectives, through a range of activities, such as ESA programmes recently endorsed by ESA ministers, or the future EU Space programme and notably its Copernicus component.

Together with paradigm shifts induced by Information Technology, such as Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, or by miniaturised satellites, this opens new opportunities for the digital economy and it enables new entrants from all member states, in particular SMEs,  to propose innovative services towards a more sustainable economy without excessive entrance fees. Europe must seize this opportunity to foster innovation and jobs in new service sectors.

Furthermore, EO data and services represents a formidable tool to support multilateralism and open cooperation, in support of the rule of law, environmental security and good neighbourhood relations and stability with special attention to regional perspectives, such as South-East Mediterranean cooperation and the Western Balkans.

The workshop will be the opportunity to confront needs and solutions and it will gather policy makers, scientists, service operators and EO application specialists.

The workshop is being jointly organised by the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education, the Faculty of Electrical Engineer and Computing of the Zagreb University and the European Space Agency under the auspices of the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Christmas Charity Event

LARICS Christmas Charity Event

Date: 19th December 2018

Location: University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, Unska 3, Zagreb, Croatia

Website: Facebook event

Amount donated: Over 13 thousand HRK (around €1,800)

On a cold Wednesday in December in Zagreb, students, faculty members and visitors of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing had the wonderful opportunity to take part in a unique event - a robot charity event. LARICS team members had the idea to use robots to serve mulled wine, tea, brownies and waffles to visitors, which would in turn donate their chosen amount of money towards a noble goal: the Autism Association Zagreb.

Numerous LARICS and Faculty robots took part in this fund-raiser - the humanoid robot Pepper took orders from customers, the robot arm Franka prepared the food, industrial robot Baxter served the treats, while NAO robots were keeping everyone entertained and in good cheer, while guests also had the opportunity to try out STEMI Hexapods, see what our Sphero robots can do and grab a Christmas-themed keychain printed during the day on a 3D printer.

The event was seen by over 40,000 people on Facebook, attracted a lot of media attention, and there were more than 1500 visitors and 700 unique orders for the robots, which resulted in almost €2,000 being donated to the Autism Association Zagreb. The gallery from the event can be seen here.
